I think the point about logins ties in very closely with the need for micropayments; a dip-in model of pay per view.
Say you've been emailed a link to by a friend. You want to read it right now: no sign-up; no subscription; no delay (has to take max 30 seconds); but you don't mind paying say 50c.
You may never visit the same site again. But if do visit the same site again, then get cumulative discounts.
